Can You Use a Self Storage Unit as a Workshop?

Isabella Blake | November 2, 2020 @ 12:00 AM

This is an easy question to answer. No, you can’t use self storage as a workshop. While using your self storage unit, the expectation is that it is to be used to be moving boxes in or out or organizing your unit. Derrel’s does not allow you to work on projects, such as fixing your car or using power tools, in or outside of your unit.

We’re proud to offer the best self storage in Fresno County. Our function is storage, not DIY.

The good news is that there are places where you can rent space by the hour to work on your projects. What sort of workshop do you need? Do you need somewhere to work on your car, or are you making things for your home out of wood? Are you a maker without all the tools you need to get a particular project done?

Though we don’t allow you to use your self storage unit as a workshop, some companies rent workshop space.

Where to Work on Your Car

Maybe you don’t have enough room at home to work on your car or other vehicles. Or, maybe you need a lift and tools that professional mechanics have access to.

In Clovis, you’ll find The Garage DIY Auto Repair, where you pay by the hour to use their facilities. You can work on cars or motorcycles and pay by the hour. They have vehicle lifts, standard toolsets, air tools, workbenches, welding tools, and mechanical assistance. You can work on your vehicle and learn more about car repair as you go.

Where to Work on All Sorts of Projects

Steampunk, cosplay, and crafting have become more popular over the years. There are a lot of tools one can use, from 3D printers to laser cutters.

If you’re working on things like new cabinets for your home, modifying electronics, or even blowing glass, then you have to check out Fresno Ideaworks

We’ve mentioned only a tiny bit of what you can accomplish here. Fresno Ideaworks also has a bike shop, ceramics shop, and blacksmith forge. Whether your craft-of-choice involves new or old technology, you can improve it here and have a lot of fun doing so.

Remaining Safe During COVID

Keep in mind that these places may be closed or have limited accessibility until the COVID-19 crisis ends. We recommend checking their sites periodically. Meanwhile, follow safety guidelines for the pandemic. When you go out, wear a mask, social distance, and wash your hands regularly.

Do an Internet Search

The two workshops we mentioned probably cover everything you would want for your DIY projects. However, in time new businesses are sure to crop up. Do an Internet search periodically to discover more.

Meanwhile, if you need a place to keep some of those DIY projects safe for a while, we have you covered at Derrel’s Mini Storage. We have many facilities in Fresno County. Plus, you can rent an affordable unit online and move in without having to see anyone in person, thereby maintaining safe social distancing. Of course, if you need help, we’re just a phone call away.
